The problem

Two cron jobs overlapped on slow nights and booked the same carrier twice. Nobody noticed until the invoices came in.

What we changed

We moved the nightly close to a queue with ordering per shipment key, so a second run waits instead of racing. The double bookings stopped the same week.

We had known about the overlap for a year and had a ticket for it. Moving it took an afternoon because we did not have to write the locking ourselves.
